Jason Texler, Head Coach

This is Coach Texler's 7th year as the Head Coach at San Marcos and his 21st season overall. Previous coaching stints as an Assistant or Head Coach include: Abraham Lincoln (IA), Escondido, El Cajon Valley, Helix and Millard West (NE). He played high school football in San Diego, graduating from El Cajon Valley. He went on to play at Southwestern College and then at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, Louisiana. He finished his education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha earning a bachelor's in Secondary Education and his Masters from National University.

He and his wife Carey of eighteen years live in San Marcos with their two dogs.

Damon Gray Linebackers SMHS class of 93' . I've been coaching youth football for 17 seasons now and was fortunate enough to be asked to join on our freshman staff 6 seasons ago.
Dan Hancher Freshman OC Hancher is in 7th season with the Knights. Before joining the Knights, he coached 18 years at Rancho Buena Vista High School, in Vista. He played offensive line at Occidental College from 1990-92. He played high school football at RBV and was a member of their 1988 and 1989 CIF championship teams. Last season was the first year that Dan took off from coaching as he got married and moved to north county. In his free time, Dan likes to play sports like basketball, tennis and beach volleyball. Dan and Brittany serve in Youth Ministry with their church here in North County and are excited to be a part of the San Marcos Knight Football family.
Dan Lewis Assistant Coach Offensive Line This is Dan’s 6th year coaching football and his first year coaching with the San Marcos Knights. Previously, Dan was coaching at Westview High School from 2012-2014 for 3 seasons, serving as QB coach and Offensive Coordinator. For two years Dan coached at the college level for Mesa College as the Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator in 2015 and 2016. Last season was the first year that Dan took off from coaching as he got married and moved to north county. In his free time, Dan likes to play sports like basketball, tennis and beach volleyball. Dan and Brittany serve in Youth Ministry with their church here in North County and are excited to be a part of the San Marcos Knight Football family.
Edward Nuckols Defensive Line/JV Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator A San Marcos native, He played football at Mission Hills c/o 2009. This is my 7th season with the Knights.
Eric Jorgensen Varsity DL Coach Jorgensen is in his 30th year of coaching football. This year he will be coaching the defensive lineman. Coach Jorgensen's playing experience is at Southern Illinois University from 1982-1986. During that time the Salukis were 1983 I-AA National Champions. Coach Jorgensen resides in Vista with his wife Laura and his son Zachary (17) and daughter Alexandria (13).
Frank Finnerty Assistant Coach Coach Frank is in his fifth season of coaching with the Knights and previously coached one season at Mt. Miguel High School. He played football at West Hills High School in Santee, CA and is now a full time student at Cal State San Marcos. Coach Frank would like to thank all of the players, trainers, and managers for their continued dedication to the Knights football program.

JC Nix Wide Receivers Nix is entering his 8th year as WR coach for the knights. As a player Coach Nix played at the collegiate level for American River JC and Midwestern State University in Texas. Once completing his playing career he joined the US Army and served 20 years on active duty before retiring in Dec 2015.
Jim Beason H Backs / Tight Ends Coach Jim Beason is a Social Sciences teacher at San Marcos High and is in his 25th year teaching at his alma mater. He is married to Lesley, and has 3 children, Hilary, Elizabeth and Ian, and 1 grandchild, Michael. Coach Beason played high school football at San Marcos High and upon graduation joined the U.S. Navy. He played two years for the 11th Naval District Rams as a running back and inside linebacker. He is in his 38th year of coaching football having coached at multiple levels and held the positions of Offensive coordinator, Defensive Coordinator and Special Teams Coordinator over that time. He has also, at one time in his career, coached every Offensive and Defensive position in football. He has served as a Junior Varsity Head Coach at SMHS from 1999 to 2003 and as a Freshman Head Coach until his recent move to the Varsity Staff last season. This is his 5th year on staff with Coach Texler.
Joel Banuelos Linebackers Banuelos begins his 4th season working with our Knight Football program where he will be working with our JV and Varsity Linebackers. Coach Banuelos is proud to be a branch in the legendary John Carrol’s coaching tree, where he worked for 15 years. In his coaching career he has coached Offensive and Defensive lines, Linebackers, Running Backs and receivers. He also served as Freshman Defensive Coordinator for 3 years. Coach Banuelos strongly believes in Loyalty, Hard Work, Dedication and a motto that was taught to him by his mentor, Coach Campbell… “ QUITTING IS NOT AN OPTION “
Mike Harris Freshman Head Coach Michael Harris enters his third year of formal coaching with the San Marcos Knights Football program. As a coach, he pushes and challenges our athletes to pursue excellence in the classroom, their personal lives and on the gridiron. Coach Harris insists that each player master the basic every day skills and drills, through rapid and exhaustive repetition to cultivate their physical and mental toughness. He is a firm believer that every student athlete has the ability to make to the college level. Coach Harris, began his career, mentoring, teaching and coaching students as a law enforcement officer assigned to local schools in San Diego County. He recently retired after 27 years of service. His life passion is to build relationships that help teenaged boys transition into morale, noble and courageous men. He is married to his wife Laina of 22 years. They have three sons, Morgan, Aaron and Jadon all of whom have played or are playing high school football. One now playing at the college level.
Mike Sommers Football Operations Coach Sommers is in his eighth year on the Knight Coaching Staff, and seventh working under Coach Texler. He offers over fourteen years of football coaching experience, as well as sixteen years coaching other sports. He grew up in western Pennsylvania, and played high school football at Slippery Rock HS. After high school he enlisted in the US Air Force, where he served eight years, and also played football for Redlands Police Department for two years. He has lived in San Marcos since the fall of 1995, and has three children, all Knights 4 Life: Carly (Class of 2018) who was a Cheerleader at SMHS, Riley (Class of 2014) who was on the Knights’ 2013 CIF Finalist team, and Chelsea (Class of 2007), currently SMHS JV Cheer Head Coach. Go Knights!
Nakoa McElrath Wide Receivers Former Washington State University (WSU) and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver. He grew up in San Diego, California, was named first team ALL CIF and graduated from Scripps Ranch High School in 1997. After high school enrolled at Palomar College excelling academically and athletically resulting in a full-ride scholarship to WSU. During the 2001 season set the WSU single season record for number of receptions and yards by a wide receiver. After the 2001 season was part of the 2002 Senior Bowl North Team which features some of the top college prospects entering the National Football League (NFL) Draft. From 2002-2008 played in the NFL, Canadian Football League, and Arena Football League. Aside from being a wide receiver coach I am a proud veteran of the US Army.
Rudy Betancourt Defensive Line Coach Betancourt returns for his second season on the freshman team as the Offensive and Defensive Line Coach. He has 21 years of coaching experience at the youth and high school levels. He is an alumnus of Oceanside High School, winning a CIF Championship under Coach John Carroll in 1995. His wife Gigi is the SMHS Varsity Cheer Coach and their three children have all attended SMHS.
Ryan Taylor Quarterbacks Ryan is entering his third year coaching in the San Marcos football program. He graduated from Aquinas high school in 2015, where he was a finalist for the Ken Hubbs award, which recognizes the top high school athletes in San Bernardino County. He is now attending California State University San Marcos while coaching football and baseball at San Marcos high school.
Sean Davidson Offensive Line Davidson is originally from Phoenix, Arizona where he played football through high school. Although recruited by many colleges, Coach Davidson elected to join the United States Marine Corps. After serving combat tours in Iraq and completing his commitment to the Marine Corps, Coach Davidson decided to stay in San Diego. He then played football for the San Diego Enforcers from 2008-2012, winning the National Championship in 2012. Coach Davidson now makes San Marcos his home, with his wife Jennifer, children Brett and Brooke, and is in his sixth year of coaching the offensive line at San Marcos High.
Sean Slade Varsity Offensive Line/JV Offensive Coordinator Born and raised in Colorado, Graduated from Pomona Senior High School in Arvada Colorado in 1987. A year after graduation Coach Slade joined the Marine Corps. While in the Marine Corps Coach Slade served on many deployments and combat tours. From 2000 to 2004 Coach Slade played football (semi pro) for the Marine Corps, playing every position on the offensive line, 3 out of the 5 years he played, he won position MVP honors . In 2008 Coach Slade retired from the Marine Corps after serving 20 years to this great nation and currently works aboard Camp Pendleton as a civil service employee. Coach Slade started coaching in 2001 at Vista High School and spent 18 years coaching O-line and QB’s, while at Vista he was part of 3 CIF championships. Coach Slade came to San Marcos 3 years ago to coach O-line. Coach Slade enjoys spending time with his Fiancé Nicki and riding their Harley. Tom Carroll Defensive Coordinator I'm a North County local that lettered in varsity football at Oceanside High School as a free safety during the 2001 and 2002 football seasons. I graduated from Oceanside High School in 2003. We won the CIF title my senior year against Helix High School in the fall of 2002. I earned first team all league honors, first team all north county honors, and second team all CIF honors during my senior year. I spent five years coaching defensive backs at Oceanside High School from 2006 until 2010 and one year coaching defensive backs at Orange Glen High School during the 2011 football season. I joined the San Marcos staff in 2012 and have coached defensive backs here since then. I'm married to my lovely wife Rosio and we have been blessed with our little ones, Mary (4 years old) and JT (2 1/2 years old).
